We have studied the ability of herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1 or H. labialis), herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2 or H. genitalis) and varicella-zoster virus or shingles (VVZ or V. varicela zoster) to latent existence in the nerve ganglia. Most sources indicate the following localization of viruses: for HSV-1 – regional ganglia of the sensory nerves of the cervicothoracic spine; for HSV-2 – lumbosacral plexus ganglia.
