Diffuse toxic goiter (Graves-Basedow disease) is an autoimmune disease characterized by persistent pathological hypersecretion of thyroid hormones,
usually by a diffusely enlarged thyroid gland. The term “goiter” should be understood as a pathological enlargement of the thyroid gland, without specifying
its functional state. The normal volume of the thyroid gland, determined by ultrasound, is 9–25 ml in men and 9–18 ml in women. The pathogenesis of diffuse
toxic goiter is based on the production of stimulating autoantibodies to TSH receptors, probably as a result of a congenital defect in the immune system.
Women get sick 5-10 times more often than men. As a rule, diffuse toxic goiter
manifests itself in young and middle age.
