A hypertensive crisis is a sudden significant increase in blood pressure from normal or elevated levels, which is almost always accompanied by the appearance or intensification of disorders in the target organs or the autonomic nervous system.

That is, a hypertensive crisis can be talked about in cases where the following signs are present: sudden onset, significant increase in blood pressure, the appearance or intensification of symptoms from the target organs. Complicated crises, in which there is an acute progressive damage to target organs, require an urgent decrease in blood pressure due to a direct threat to the life of patients (myocardial infarction, stroke, acute dissecting aortic aneurysm, acute left ventricular failure, transient ischemic attack, etc.).
