ETERNITY – an attribute of God, a sign of transcendental being, not infinite the length of time, and a category, qualitatively different from the time of our experience, “the infinitely lasting present.” Plato in Timaeus called time “the fluid image of eternity.” The German thinker of the Middle Ages Eckhart wrote: “Time is what prevents the light from reaching us.” And the Persian philosopher and poet of the Middle Ages Rumi said: “The past and the future hide God from our eyes.” The 5th century Roman philosopher Boethius wrote in Consolation in Philosophy that God is always eternal and actual, and used this position to reconcile the omniscience of God with the free will of man. “Eternity is the complete and perfect possession of unlimited life.”
