On one of my trips to Siberia, I ended up in an endemic zone of parasite infestation with a worm that causes a disease in humans – opisthorchiasis. In 30% of the patients I examined, this disease was detected during ART, but 20% of them already knew about it. Ten of them were operated on with a diagnosis of acute cholecystitis, obstructive jaundice. Three were diagnosed with gallbladder cancer. Only after the operation was he diagnosed with opisthorchiasis of the liver and biliary tract.
