Adenoids (adenoid growths, adenoid vegetations) are a pathological increase in the size of the pharyngeal tonsil. The pharyngeal tonsil is located in the fornix of
the nasopharynx and is part of the lymphoid pharyngeal ring of N.I. Pirogov. Adenoid vegetations are caused by the proliferation of lymphoid tissue of the
pharyngeal tonsils. They are widespread in children, most often observed between the ages of 3 and 7 years.
The development of adenoids is facilitated by diseases that cause
inflammation of the nasal mucosa and tonsils (measles, scarlet fever, herpes
viruses, etc.).
