WHO obtains data on tuberculosis through annual data collection cycles and from databases maintained by other multilateral agencies. In 2019, data were collected from 202 countries and territories that account for more than 99% of the world’s population and estimated TB cases. The Strategy to End Tuberculosis sets targets for reducing the incidence and mortality of tuberculosis (for 2020 and 2025) and corresponding targets (for 2030 and 2035).

Targets for 2030 call for a 90% reduction in tuberculosis mortality and an 80% reduction in tuberculosis incidence compared to 2015. Targets for 2020 include a 35% reduction in tuberculosis mortality and a reduction in tuberculosis incidence by 20%. A positive trend is the steady pace of progress towards the 2020 target for morbidity and mortality in the WHO European Region.
